I have always been terrified of drawing or painting in a public place. I hate people coming over to check whether I’m capturing what’s in front of me as accurately as it is in real life and then proceeding to give non helpful criticism. Therefore when the time came to go on a field trip to Seattle’s Pikes Place Market and do just that, it’s safe to say that I wasn’t thrilled about it. However, I was in for a surprise. I loved it! Yes…it was a little awkward at first and people did come over to look over my shoulder but I managed to shut them out and also tried placing myself in a non-obvious place so as not to bring too much attention to myself. What I loved about this experience was the freedom I felt by not overthinking the quick sketch. It is by no means perfect but it feels organic and tells the story from my point of view. It’s definitely something I want to put into practice more often.
